Product Placement!

We have created a world full of brands! I feel there is really no escape from seeing or hearing a brand name in ones everyday life. All that in mind, I believe 100% those brands have a place in the music industry, for that matter in the entire entertainment industry. It’s crazy to me that artists and actors are all brands as well. I think of the industry as one giant corporation that holds and distributes millions of brands.
In my personal opinion, I do not think an artist is a sell out for integrating product placement in their music. As I described, it’s really something you can’t get away from, so I don’t blame them for it. They are simply guilty of being human. We all have brands that we love, and the things we love to do are created by a brand. It’s not uncommon to say something like I’m sitting here drinking a Starbucks latte. I have mentioned brand names in Facebook posts unintentionally. It is just so commonplace. All in all they are actually making their music more relatable by integrating product placement. What’s really funny to me is when artists sing their name in their songs, thus promoting themselves. Lady Gaga and Jason Derulo are extremely guilty of this!
Here is a music video from one of my favorite artists Bruno Mars. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLexgOxsZu0).
In “The Lazy Song” Bruno Mars has two phrases in his lyrics that integrate product placement. He sings, “I’ll be lounging on my couch, just chillin’ in my Snuggie”. He also says, “tomorrow I’ll wake up and do some P90X”.
My conclusion, our culture and way of life is influenced and created by businesses. It’s a crazy thought, but it’s so true.
