Tim Adams article titled: "The Best Chance You'll Get?" was extremely interesting to me. It's all about gambling. I do
believe that humans have a natural tendency to gamble. I was so fascinated by
the experiment with the mice and the pellet jackpot. That mouse really sat
there and played a “slot machine”. The thrill of getting those pellets overtook
that little mouse’s brain. It really proved to me that animals in general have
that urge to gamble. The only difference in humans is we have the power to
fight it and make a choice. We should fight this urge in the sense that we need
to balance ourselves. It’s not a mystery that gambling in casinos can result to
financial suicide. However gambling in the sense of “taking risks” can often
lead to success.
Which leads me to saying that I wish I was more of a
risk-taker. I tend to be very safe in most of my decisions. I know for me this
comes from fear. I am absolutely terrified of somehow becoming homeless, and
feeling as though I am a failure in life. Moving to Los Angeles was definitely
the biggest risk I have every taken. I didn’t really plan anything. I just quit
my job and hoped to find another once I got here. Luckily I had my brother with
me, so together we created a support team. My idea was that once I lived in LA,
I could audition for thousands of projects both singing and acting. What I
experienced was a huge culture shock. Leaving my small town in Oregon, my brain
did not calculate the full risk I was taking.
Going on six years now, I am still living in Los Angeles. I
have to say I love every moment of it. My strategy or kind of lack of one
actually turned out a success. After only a month of being here I was able to
get a job at Starbucks. This job continues to help me stay out here and pay my
bills. I also am happy to say that I have done quite a few auditions, and have
had so much fun. This city has really changed and molded me into the person I
always wanted to be. I am now getting my bachelors degree at Full Sail and
continuing to fallow my dreams. The feedback from my auditions has fueled me
into perfecting my talent and enhancing my knowledge. I will continue to make
courageous gambling decisions, and one day I will see this town from the top of
the Hollywood Hills.
